Established in 1990, the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS) aims to promote the advancement of knowledge in physics in the Asia Pacific region, including research, application, and education.
The idea to form AAPPS started at the first Asia-Pacific Physics Conference (APPC), held in Singapore in 1983, and was realized at the fourth APPC in 1990, with Chen-Ning Yang being the founding president. As of January 1, 2023, AAPPS has 20 member societies, 1 associate member society, and 4 divisions (Division of Plasma Physics, Division of Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Gravitation, Division of Nuclear Physics, and Division of Condensed Matter Physics).
APPC is currently a triennial conference, covering all areas of physics. The latest one (the 15th APPC) was held in 2022, hosted by the Korean Physical Society. It was an online conference due to the COVID situation, having more than 1000 participants and more than 900 presentations. It had a special session "Global Physics Summit" participated in by presidents of AAPPS member societies, International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), European Physical Society (EPS), American Physical Society (APS), and Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP). The next APPC (the 16th APPC) will be held in Beijing in 2025, hosted by Chinese Physical Society, Beijing.
AAPPS publishes AAPPS Bulletin since June 1991. We recently set up the new role of AAPPS Bulletin as a world-leading journal of physics, and started, in 2021, a new publishing style in cooperation with Springer-Nature. AAPPS Bulletin publishes cutting-edge research articles and review articles along with societies' news.
Each year, AAPPS-APCTP C. N. Yang Award is given to three young researchers to honor their prominent research achievements and to promote the development of leaders in physics in the Asia Pacific region. Nominations can be done by AAPPS member societies, AAPPS divisions, participants of the most recent APPC (15th APPC) who paid the full registration fee, and APCTP member entities.
AAPPS strongly encourage formation of more divisions. There are many ways to form a division. Proposals and discussions are more than welcome. Possible candidates may include, and not limited to, Particles and Fields, and Quantum Information.
Physics achievements and activities are growing rapidly in the Asia Pacific region, and more intersociety cooperations and recognitions are highly required. AAPPS will make its best efforts to contribute to the development of physics in the Asia Pacific region.
