Full Text
of IPAP Books 2 Is Available On-line
Dear colleague,
I’d like
to introduce a new book in English entitled “Photonics Based
on Wavelength Integration and Manipulation” which is available
on-line, free of charge, at
http://www.ipap.jp/index_proceedngs.html.
This 378-page book is the final report of a joint research
project in academia in Japan entitled “Photonics Based on
Wavelength Integration and Manipulation—Towards the Ultimate
Utilization of Spectral Resources.” There are 32 research
teams from various universities that participated in this
four-year project carried out until 2004. Following an
additional brief overview of the above project, 32 research
papers contributed from all the respective teams are
presented. Each team is encouraged to include an appropriate
introduction and review of the relevant research field so
that readers who are not familiar with the field can
comprehend it more easily.
The 32 original research papers have been arranged into the
following six parts:
1. Ultraviolet/Visible-Wavelength Materials
and Devices,
2. Novel Emitters and Amplifiers,
3. Wavelength Conversion Devices,
4. Wide-Wavelength-Range Switching Devices,
5. Ultrafast Switching Devices/Systems,
6. Wavelength Routing Devices/Systems.
This joint research project has been funded by the Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
of Japan through a “Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Re-search on
Priority Areas.” The whole project was aimed at developing a
new photonic technology which can integrate and manipulate the
wavelengths of light in a precise, parallel, and fast manner,
to achieve a much better utilization of spectral resources.
This technology involves various new integrated or discrete
high-performance devices that are compact in size, enabling
light emission, amplification, and wavelength conversion, as
well as ultrawide-band and ultrahigh-speed modulation and
switching, wavelength routing and signal processing over a
very wide wavelength range. This technology and science may
open up a new and rich world of photonics based on the
combination of three coordinates — wavelength, time and space
— instead of the present technology which exists mainly in the
time and space domain.
Through this four-year joint research
project, an enormous amount of novel and valuable results have
been generated. The number of published journal papers and
international conference
papers totals 1200. The essence of all these most advanced
results and ideas are summarized in this book. We all
sincerely hope that our results will contribute to the
progress of information and communication technologies as much
as possible.
This book has just been published through the Institute of Pure and
Applied Physics (IPAP) as IPAP Books 2. Paper edition
(charged) of the book is also available via the above website.
The IPAP is a non-profit-organization operated jointly by the
Japan Society of Applied Physics and the Physical Society of
Japan, which publishes 4 periodicals (Japanese Journal of
Applied Physics, Journal of the Physical Society of Japan,
Progress of Theoretical Physics, Optical Review) and various
non-periodical publications in English including IPAP Books
and Conference Series.
